Signs it is time to change schools
Is it time to think about changing schools?
You might think about a different school placement for your child. When you have some of these issues with your child’s current school, this might be the time to look at other educational options for your dyslexic learner.
1) Has the school given your child a special reading program, and your child is still behind?
2) The school is struggling to organize an effective program, and your child is falling behind.
3) You feel like you are fighting a constant battle to have the school provide the promised services.
4) Your child is demonstrating the onset of negative behaviors.
Ex. Talking about being stupid or dumb,
Starts talking about hating school,
Refuses to get up in the morning and get ready for school,
Complains about stomachache, sore throat, or other physical ailments when there are no apparent symptoms
5) You observe some unusual behaviors.
Ex. Your child, who is ordinarily docile, starts showing aggressive behaviors.
Your child an outgoing person, withdraws and doesn’t want to leave their room or the house.
6). Nightly homework sessions end in tears and often the assignments are incomplete. You have written many notes explaining to the teacher that your child is struggling with homework and needs constant adult help to do the assignments.
If you are experiencing one or more of these issues and your family is adversely affected by these factors, it is time to look for another school for your neurodiverse child.
Also, Dr. Sally Shaywitz in the second edition of Overcoming Dyslexia, addresses these issues. Many of the ideas in this blog came from her book. I invite you to get a copy of this excellent text as a reference.
